Pairing drinks with sushi

Light, clean drinks let delicate flavors shine.

Light, clean drinks let delicate flavors shine. Hot green tea is the classic companion.

Green tea first

Hot green tea is the classic companion. Its gentle bitterness cleanses the palate between pieces and suits every kind of fish.

Many sushi bars serve a strong, powdered tea near the end of the meal.

Sake and beyond

Chilled sake with a clean, dry profile pairs well with white fish and shellfish. Richer pieces like salmon or tuna belly can stand up to fuller styles.

Crisp lagers and dry sparkling wine are also easy matches for fried rolls and tempura.

Keep it balanced

Avoid very sweet, oaky, or heavily flavored drinks, which can overpower delicate fish.

When in doubt, ask the server what they enjoy with the day’s selection.
